Contax U4R, Kyocera SL400R and Nikon Coolpix 995 image comparison

CONTAX U4R KYOCERA SL400R COOLPIX 995 Comments
No zoom with Leica 20x Using the Leica 20x eyepiece amazingly there is no vignetting on either the Contax or the Kyocera. There is however on the Coolpix 995. The images look very sharp (too sharp?) from the U4R and the SL400R but the contrast is probably a little better from the 995.
Center crop from above image This crop from the original image above demonstrates the over sharpening of the U4R and the SL400R. Even turning this feature right down on both cameras the highlights are exaggerated somewhat. The 995 has a much more realistic feel to the image with softer edges. Noise is also better from the 995 with the U4R coming second and the SL400R only just behind the U4R.

Zoom at maximum with Leica 20x Now with all three zooms up to maximum (3x on all) the qualities of the lenses shows through. The 995 is the weakest of the three (see the crop below).

Despite being the softest image, the 995 comes through with very low noise compared with the other two. The U4R is a close second and the SL400R shows slightly more speckling than the rest.

This show also demonstrates the white balances of all three cameras. A feature of the U4R is a blue hue, demonstrated here. The SL400R and the 995 score better on this front with more natural colours.
