Taiga and Red-breasted Flycatchers (Taiga Flycatcher - Flamborough Head, 26th April 2003 - First UK record)

Compare the two (sub) species side-by-side on this page.

  • You will notice that the Tiaga has a heavier bill, without the pale base Red-breasted Fly's do
  • Also the black in the upper-tail coverts goes further up in to the rump
  • The whole bird is also a lot colder and greyer in appearance than a Red-breasted Fly
  • Unfortunately I don't have an image of a summer male RB Fly to compare but if I did you would also notice a much smaller area of orange around the throat on a Taiga

Note how far up the rump the black goes and compare with the Red-breasted Fly's on the right as well as the Tiaga Fly image taken in Thailand a few months previous
